Date: 21/12/2010
On 21 December 2010, Dr Rachel McKee from Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand, was invited to the centre to hold a public seminar entitled Professional Role and Ethics of Sign Language Interpreters. Dr McKee is currently the programme director of Deaf studies at Victoria University of Wellington. Trained in the first group of NZSL interpreters (1985), she also holds RID (CI) certification as an ASL interpreter, and a Ph.D. in applied linguistics from the University of California, Los Angeles. Working with Dr David McKee, she has established programmes to train sign language interpreters, Deaf teachers of NZSL, and NZSL as foreign language courses. During the seminar, she introduced three different possible models of sign language interpretation, and had a lively, interactive discussion with the audience on the pros and cons of each model. The seminar was attended by over 80 participants, the majority of whom were hearing people interested in or practicing sign language interpretation in Hong Kong.
