2021 International Talk Series on Co-enrolment Education with Sign Language Support

The Centre for Sign Linguistics and Deaf Studies of the Chinese University of Hong Kong is pleased to announce the 2021 International Talk Series to celebrate its 15th anniversary of establishing an innovative, inclusive education model for deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) and hearing children in Hong Kong - Sign Bilingualism and Co-enrolment Education Programme (The SLCO Programme).

The Centre for Sign Linguistics and Deaf Studies is honoured by the speakers from Australia, Austria, Germany, China (Hong Kong SAR, Macau SAR, Quzhou), The Netherlands and the United States. They will share the educational philosophy and practices of co-enrolment education in their countries and discuss its positive impacts on the development of DHH and hearing children and challenges.

Triple A Volunteers Annual Concert:聾健同心 ‧ 手語雙語樂共融

17 and 18 May, 2019

Deaf and hearing students from the SLCO Programme participated in Triple A Volunteers Annual Concert for fundraising of the Programme. They presented music and performance in various ways, including adding different visual elements, sign interpretation, tactile sensation, vibration and so on, in order to enable both the Deaf and Hearing to enjoy the concert.


Performance of Deaf and Hearing Students with Hong Kong Youth Symphonic Band

Deaf and hearing students of Kowloon Bay St. John the Baptist Catholic Primary School and Notre Dame College joined the Hong Kong Youth Symphonic Band in their annual performance and performed musical pieces using hand bells sign language. Thank you to all teachers, students and the Band who spent a long time preparing and practicing for this wonderful event.


Distinguished Scholars Seminars - Sign Bilingualism: Scientific Evidence and Educational Applications

Thanks to the support of the U.S. Consulate General for Hong Kong and Macau, the Centre for Sign Linguistics and Deaf Studies is honored to invite three distinguished scholars in the field of Neurolinguistics and Deaf Education - Dr. David Corina (University of California - Davis), Dr. Christopher Kurz (Rochester Institute of Technology) and Dr. Susan Lane-Outlaw (Metro Deaf School – St. Paul, Minnesota) to conduct a series of public seminars on 14 & 15 August 2015 to address how sign language, sign bilingualism and visual learning could benefit children's development in practical education situations, with support from research evidence.

Taiwan Communication Disorder Association Conference 2013

Project Director Prof. Gladys Tang and Project Manager Mr. Chris Yiu was invited to attend the Annual Meeting and Conference of the Taiwan Communication Disorder Association held in Taiwan on 28 September, 2013. The theme of the conference was "Building an environment with no communication barriers", topics discussed included the pedagogies, researches and services related to the language and communication problems encountered by students with different types of impairment. In the conference, Prof. Gladys Tang was invited to present on the relationship between Sign Linguistics and Deaf Education. There were around 100 participants including scholars and experts in language and communication disorder from Mainland China and Taiwan, teachers, parents, audiologists, speech therapists, sign language interpreters, post-graduate students and representatives of social welfare groups for the disabled.


Invited Lecture for Child Assessment Service

Programme Director Prof. Gladys Tang was invited to give a lecture in the in-service training event of Child Assessment Service (CAS), Department of Health titled "Language Development in Children with Hearing Impairment: from Theory to Practice" on 29 July, 2013. A total of 85 professionals from CAS consisting of a multidisciplinary team of paediatricians, clinical psychologists, speech therapists, audiologists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, optometrist, nurses and medical social workers attended the lecture. In the lecture, Prof. Tang talked about the background of sign bilingualism, the language development of deaf children, current researches on sign bilingual acquisition and ways to achieve social integration for deaf children.


Theoretical Issues in Sign Language Research (TISLR) Conference 11

10-13 July, 2013

A research team composed of 10 deaf and hearing researchers, including Prof. Gladys Tang, Prof. Scholastica Lam and 3 researchers from the Jockey Club Sign Bilingualism and Co-enrolment in Deaf Education Programme, participated in Theoretical Issues in Sign Language Research (TISLR) Conference 11 during 10-13 July, 2013 in University College London (UCL). TISLR is a renowned international sign language research conferences with researchers from different countries presenting different research topics in sign langauge, including linguistics structures, pragmatics, acquisition, sociolinguistics, neurolinguistics, etc., The followings are the topics of the poster presentation by the researchers from the Programme:

  • Acquisition of verb agreement in Hong Kong Sign Language by Late Learners in the Jockey Club Sign Bilingualism and Co-enrolment in Deaf Education Programme (Scholastica Lam and Pippen Wong)
  • Acquisition of nonmanual adverbials in Hong Kong Sign Language by deaf children in the Jockey Club Sign Bilingualism and Co-enrolment in Deaf Education Programme (Jia Li, Scholastica Lam and Cat H-M. Fung )
  • Development of discourse referencing in Hong Kong Sign Language narratives by Deaf/hard-of-hearing children in the Jockey Club Sign Bilingualism and Co-enrolment in Deaf Education Programme (Felix Yim-Binh Sze and Betty Cheung)


Visit from Curriculum Development Coordinators

An officer from EDB and 7 Curriculum Development Coordinators from mainstream primary schools visited partner school Kowloon Bay St. John the Baptist Catholic Primary School on 26 February, 2013. The aim of the visit was mainly to learn more about the Jockey Club Sign Bilingualism and Co-enrolment in Deaf Education Programme. Project Manager Mr. Chris Yiu introduced the Programme and the learning packages to the visitors. Vice-Principal Ms. Ng shared how inclusive practices were implemented in school to support D/hh students. The visitors observed a Mathematics lesson in 5A and met with the Deaf and hearing teachers. All of them had given their written comments on the Programme after the visit, and their feedback was very positive.


"A Cry Of Silence" Musical Performance

31 January, 2013

Partner school Kowloon Bay St. John the Baptist Catholic Primary School was invited to perform a musical titled "A Cry Of Silence" at the 3rd International Conference on Sign Linguistics and Deaf Education in Asia on 31 January 2013 at Sir Run Run Shaw Hall in The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Around 600 audiences attended the performance. The musical, starring Deaf and hearing students and teachers of the school, is a story about how two Deaf children who transferred to a school offering sign bilingual and co-enrolment education overcome various problems with the help and support from students and teachers. The performance was very successful and it let audiences know better about how sign bilingual and co-enrolment education could benefit both Deaf and hearing children. We would like to thank Principal Margaret So, Vice-Principal Rebecca Ng, Director Kwok Chi Wai Ray, the crew and all performers once again for their effort in giving such an excellent performance.


Visit from Conference Participants

29 and 31 January, 2013

A total of 49 Deaf and hearing participants of the 3rd International Conference on Sign Linguistics and Deaf Education in Asia visited both of the Programme's partner schools, Peace Evangelical Centre Kindergarten (Ngau Tau Kok) and Kowloon Bay St. John the Baptist Catholic Primary School, in two groups on 29 and 31 January 2013 respectively. Programme Manager Mr. Chris Yiu first introduced the background, idea and development of the Programme, then the visitors were separated in groups to observe classes and activities in co-enrolment classes. The visit ended with a sharing session by teachers and parents.
