HKSL Browser
As an online database of Hong Kong Sign Language (HKSL), the "Hong Kong Sign Language Browser" was designed to roughly document HKSL vocabulary commonly used by Deaf people in Hong Kong, including different variants of HKSL vocabulary, which can serve as a reference for the public. Other objectives of this browser are to promote HKSL among the public and to support activities related to sign language including deaf education and sign language interpretation services. As of 2 May 2014, HKSL Browser has collected a total of 1,842 natural HKSL lexical entries. Meanwhile, we are collecting, documenting and analyzing HKSL data continuously so as to increase and update our database.
For the convenience of users, we provide the closest Chinese translation and the handshape used together with each entry. Visitors can search corresponding HKSL entries via the initial handshape of the HKSL entry or the number of strokes in the Chinese translation. Apart from demonstration videos of HKSL, the initial handshapes of the HKSL and their corresponding Chinese translation, the browser also displays various data provided by deaf organizations, including: 1) the variants of HKSL vocabulary they had encountered, 2) whether a specific sign is prevalent within their community/association, and 3) the distribution of users’ ages, so that the general public may understand the usage of HKSL vocabulary better.
