首屆手語習得研討會標誌著全球手語習得研究發展的一項重要里程碑。本次研討會的主要目標是「推廣語言習得，尤其是手語習得，的的紮實知識」。這場備受矚目的研討會由葡萄牙天主教大學 (Universidade Católica Portuguesa) 健康科學研究所(Instituto de Ciências da Saúde) 主辦。
本中心的研究人員於是次研討會上發表了 4 篇論文：
聾童的手語發展
