Visiting Lecturer: Prof. Yutaka Osugi

Date: 09/08/2013 - 21/08/2013

From 09 August 2013 until 21 August 2013, we were honored to once again have Prof. Yutaka Osugi teaching the APSL students at the Centre for Sign Linguistics and Deaf Studies. This time, Prof. Osugi came to teach APSL students of the second cohort about the history of the Deaf community.

One student, Brenda, said, "there were a lot of different topics. The course was eye-opening. My deepest impression was being taught about geography and sociology of deaf communities. For example, Prof. Osugi has collected a lot of information about old deaf people and deaf staff and volunteers at old folks" homes in Japan. He wanted to keep deaf history and let people know what deaf people’s needs are."

Another student, Masumi, had this to say of her experience in his class: "I was impressed by his lesson about "Deaf space". The "Deaf space" refers to designing a room from a deaf person"s perspective. It was very interesting for me. "
