Date: 20/08/2012 - 29/08/2012
From 20 August 2012 – 29 August 2012, Prof. Yutaka Osugi came to the CSLDS as a visiting Deaf scholar and taught the higher diploma students of the first APSL cohort. Prof. Osugi is originally from Japan and obtained his Ph.D. at the Rochester Institute for the Deaf in New York, USA. He is currently an associate professor at the Tsukuba University of Technology.
First cohort students Brayan Susantha and Laura Lesmana Wijaya wrote a statement about their experience in Prof. Osugi’s class: “We felt very glad and excited [when Prof.Osugi taught us] because he gave us many different examples of cultures and identities. For example, he asked what our countries’ cultures are like--such as our clothes, language, and ways of life. However, there are differences between Deaf culture and the majority culture. Deaf culture includes our commitment to our community—the commitment to keep our history, art, and Deaf rights alive.”
