On 15 June 2013, the Ministry of Education of Taiwan expressed their plans on demanding all teachers to learn basic sign language in teacher development programmes. The Ministry of Education is planning to let teachers learn basic sign language in order to communicate with deaf students and to understand their needs, so that deaf students can learn in mainstream classes inclusively. In short term, the ministry will be developing online e-learning resources for teachers. In long term, efforts will be put into further strengthening pre-service teacher development and in-service teacher training programmes. The ministry will be inviting experts and scholars to set a clear direction and goal in August 2013.
