Introduction:

In recent years, the recognition and acceptance of sign languages has been receiving increased attention across the world, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region. Sign language interpreters, teachers and trainers for the Deaf, as well as sign language researchers with excellent sign language skills and strong awareness of deafness are thus in great demand. This programme introduces fundamental knowledge related to sign languages, Deaf communities and Deaf culture. Students will be equipped with relevant skills applicable to various job sectors in society which serve the Deaf community. In addition, this programme provides a solid background for students intending to apply for the Diploma Programme in Sign Language Interpretation and/or the Diploma Programme in Deaf Education.

Programme learning outcomes:

After completion of the programme, students are expected to:

  1. Demonstrate an advanced level of proficiency in a sign language;
  2. Demonstrate a basic knowledge of the linguistic structures of sign language;
  3. Demonstrate a basic knowledge about the linguistic differences between sign language and spoken language;
  4. Cultivate an understanding of Deaf communities and their cultures, and an acceptance of deaf values.

Admission Requirements:

Applicants should have a minimum of 5 passes in HKCEE or level two in 5 HKDSE subjects or equivalent (e.g. grade 11 in the US Education system); and applicants should demonstrate language proficiency in Hong Kong Sign Language at the intermediate level; and applicants should meet the minimum English requirement through attaining 5.0 in IELTS or 64 in TOEFL (iBT) or level two in English subject in HKDSE or equivalent*; mature applicants at the age of 21 or above who do not meet the above minimum admission but possess a demonstrated ability (e.g. good presentation skills and communication ability in Hong Kong Sign Language, Chinese and English) to pursue the programme are eligible to apply for admission.*other examples of equivalent qualifications would be 510 in TOEFL (paper) and 600 in TOEIC. Applicants are required to attend a Hong Kong Sign Language proficiency test, a written test in Chinese and English and a face-to-face interview. Admissions will be subject to the decision of the selection committee.
