EXPLANATION: Handshape

This list below lists the handshapes that have been identified in HKSL, as well as the configuration of the manual articulators. There are in total of 60 handshapes that have been identified to contribute to the lexical signs of HKSL. In the following table, the handshapes are arranged from fully closed to fully open. In between we find handshapes that differ in terms of the number and the type of fingers selected, and finger joint(s) involved in the configuration. The handshapes below are accompanied by symbols adopted from the Stokoe's notation system (Stokoe et.al 1976), with minor modifications. As for fingerspelling, deaf signers adopt the handshape of the ASL manual alphabets. The ASL manual alphabets will NOT be included in the searching, but will be provided seperately in "Sign Example" section in the future development. More handshapes may be included with the development of the SignBank, which will involve more Sign Languages from different countries.
