With a generous donation from The Nippon Foundation to the Centre for Sign Linguistics and Deaf Studies at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the Nippon Foundation Scholarship for Sign Linguistics in Asia has been set up to support students interested in pursuing training in sign linguistics at the Chinese University of Hong Kong at the postgraduate level. While the field of sign linguistics has expanded in Asia in recent decades enabling us to appreciate the rich varieties of sign languages used in Asia, the number of sign language researchers remains small. With the scholarship, we aim at creating an academic community in Asia and the Pacific to support universities in developing research and training in sign linguistics.
